Fall 2021
Our third project design focused on designing an album cover based off of an existing album using elements of space and time. I chose Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak's new album, An Evening with Silk Sonic, as my album of choice after listening to their singles "Skate" and "Leave the Door Open" that were released earlier this 2021 year. My designs were made before their album dropped on November 12th, 2021, so a redesign is in the works.
The album cover designs were inspired by their song "Skate," where I felt that it needed bright colors to match the 70's vibe of the music. I utilized linear perspective shown through the SKATE letters and motion through a Black woman rollerskating in the center, chosen for the nature and genre of the album: 70's styled soul/funk.
I designed three different versions to experiment with different compositions and colors. I found that the design shown below was the most successful among my peers. The concept of motion and linear perspective is shown through the implied movement of the woman rollerskating and through her proportions where the vanishing point is behind her. Linear perspective is also shown from the SKATE letters and the stripes of color that connect at the vanishing point. I used dafont.com to find retro-styled typography to fully saturate that mood and vibe. Overall, I wanted this album cover to portray a fun, hip, and cohesive design.
